TWELVE ARRESTED OVER ALLEGED RIGHT-WING TERROR THREAT TO ISLAMIC EVENT

Counter Terrorism Policing London said twelve people were arrested over an alleged right-wing terror threat to the UK Ijtima event at Shrubland Hall in Barham, Suffolk. The event was ended early on Sunday as a precaution following the possible threat. Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said officers made arrests across various locations in the country. The investigation was confirmed as "right-wing terrorism related", with officers conducting searches at multiple addresses linked to those arrested.

Eight men were arrested and detained under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and remain in custody. Three other men were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, and one woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Of these four, one person was released on bail whilst the other three remain in custody. Police stated there was no believed wider threat to the public connected to the matter.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the police response to the "credible threat" had "undoubtedly saved lives". Mahmood stated the arrests were "deeply concerning news for British Muslims" and called for the country to "stand against hatred" and unite around shared beliefs in an open, generous and tolerant society.
