JOSH KERR CONFIRMED FOR WORLD RECORD MILE ATTEMPT AT LONDON STADIUM
Josh Kerr will attempt a world record in the mile at the Diamond League Series event at London Stadium on Saturday, organisers confirmed. The Scottish runner, an Olympic silver medallist and two-time world indoor champion, will compete in the Emsley Carr Mile alongside a field of international competitors. Neil Gourley, Kerr's Scottish compatriot and European indoor mile record holder, will also participate. The field includes Paris Olympic bronze medallist Yared Nuguse and Americans Hobbs Kessler and Nathan Green.
The announcement follows Emmanuel Wanyonyi's performance at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco two days prior, where the Kenyan Olympic and world 800m champion broke the long-standing men's 1,000m world record on his debut at the distance. Kerr finished second in that race. The London event will feature additional strong fields across multiple distances, with Jake Wightman competing in an 800m line-up that includes Wanyonyi, Canadian silver medallist Marco Arop, American Olympic finalist Bryce Hoppel, and runners from Ireland and England.
The women's programme will include Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson in the 800m, where world silver medallist Georgia Hunter Bell and Dutch runner Femke Broeders-Bol will also compete. Julien Alfred, the double Olympic medallist from Saint Lucia, will defend her London title in the 200m after clocking the third-fastest women's 200m time in history at Monaco. Alfred will face competition from American Gabby Thomas and English runners Dina Asher-Smith, Amy Hunt and Success Eduan.
