OLLY ROBBINS LAUNCHES LEGAL CHALLENGE TO DISMISSAL BY STARMER

MON 13 JUL 2026 UK POLITICS

Olly Robbins, former chief civil servant at the Foreign Office, has submitted a request for judicial review following his dismissal by Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The FDA Union, which represents Robbins, confirmed the legal challenge in a statement. Robbins' submission contends that Starmer lacked statutory authority to remove him from his position as head of the diplomatic service. The challenge also argues that no fair procedure or process was followed in the dismissal and that Robbins was given "irrational" reasons for his firing.

Robbins was removed from his role following a security vetting matter involving Peter Mandelson, who was appointed as Foreign Secretary. According to Robbins' legal submission, the dismissal lacked procedural fairness and proper justification. Robbins stated in a comment that he brought the action reluctantly and that it would have been unnecessary had the Prime Minister apologised and addressed the distress and costs caused to him and his family. He said he is now asking the courts to determine whether the Prime Minister's decisions were unlawful and unreasonable, and to quash them.

The judicial review process will examine whether the Prime Minister acted within his legal powers in removing Robbins from the Foreign Office. The case centres on questions of statutory authority, procedural fairness and the lawfulness of the dismissal decision. Further details of the legal proceedings are expected to emerge as the challenge progresses through the courts.
