MITCH MCCONNELL REVEALS FALL LED TO HOSPITALIZATION

SUN 12 JUL 2026 INTERNATIONAL

US Senator Mitch McConnell disclosed on Sunday that a fall resulted in his hospitalization on 14 June, ending weeks of public silence about his condition. The Kentucky Republican, aged 84, stated that he has undergone extensive medical testing to establish the cause of the fall. McConnell explained his prolonged silence by noting that people of his generation often resist discussing the vulnerability associated with ageing, and that this instinct persists despite his public position. He said he is currently in a rehabilitation centre and will not return to the Senate immediately, though he continues to conduct Senate business with his staff.

McConnell's statement came after his office had provided minimal information for weeks, merely stating he was "receiving excellent care". As his hospital stay extended, public speculation intensified about his health status. Kentucky's Democratic Governor Andy Beshear made an unusual appeal for McConnell to provide transparent updates to the public. The statement included a photograph of McConnell with his wife, Elaine Chao, and showed him holding a copy of Saturday's Washington Post sports section, apparently intended to address online speculation about his condition.

The disclosure followed the death of fellow Republican Senator Lindsey Graham on Saturday evening. Graham's office reported that the South Carolina senator, aged 71, died of an aortic dissection caused by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. McConnell's update represents his first detailed public account of his hospitalisation and recovery process.
