VAN DER POEL WINS TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE NINE IN SPRINT FINISH

SUN 12 JUL 2026 CYCLING

Mathieu van der Poel won the ninth stage of the Tour de France in a sprint finish ahead of Tobias Johannessen and Tom Pidcock. The stage, held on Sunday between Malemort and Ussel, was shortened by approximately 30 kilometres due to temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius, following a red alert issued by French authorities. Tadej Pogacar, the defending champion, finished six seconds behind van der Poel in the chasing peloton and retained the leader's yellow jersey ahead of Monday's first rest day.

Van der Poel described the stage as "super-hard" but reported that conditions were preferable to earlier in the race. He told TNT Sports that he had struggled to recover during the opening stages but felt improved over recent days. Pidcock had been seeking a second Tour stage victory but was hampered when his gear shifter malfunctioned approximately 25 kilometres from the finish, leaving him unable to change gear. Despite maintaining contact with the breakaway pack, Pidcock could not match van der Poel's acceleration in the final sprint.

Van der Poel's victory marks his third stage win at the Tour de France, following previous victories in 2021 and 2025. The Dutch rider is also a three-time winner of the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. Pidcock acknowledged the mechanical failure but stated that van der Poel would have presented a difficult challenge in a sprint finish regardless of the bike malfunction.
