IRELAND BEATS JAPAN 36-20 IN NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP

SAT 11 JUL 2026 RUGBY

Ireland defeated Japan 36-20 in the Nations Championship at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle, Australia. Nick Timoney, Tom O'Toole, Robbie Henshaw, Sean Jansen and Tom Stewart scored tries for Ireland. Taira Main and Hayate Era crossed for Japan. Ireland head coach Andy Farrell stated he was "more relieved than anything" following the victory, which saw his side finish with a flourish to secure a bonus point.

Farrell made nine changes to the Ireland line-up from the previous week's match against Australia, with Dan Sheehan rested ahead of next week's fixture against New Zealand in Auckland. Tadhg Beirne captained Ireland for the first time. Four players made their Test debuts: Sean Jansen, Billy Bohan, Sam Illo and Bryn Ward. Beirne acknowledged that Ireland's set-piece errors contributed to Japan's scoring opportunities, with both Japanese tries following Irish line-out mistakes. Jansen, a 27-year-old back row player, described his debut as a "dream come true" after crossing for a try in the second half.

Farrell acknowledged that the performance contained errors and the stop-start nature of play, but framed the result as positive given the number of personnel changes and combinations trialled during the week. The victory represents Ireland's thirteenth win in fifteen meetings against Japan. Ireland will face New Zealand in Auckland next week.
