MURDOCH REFUSES TO REVEAL FALCONIO'S BURIAL LOCATION
Footage released by Northern Territory Police shows John Murdoch, the man convicted of killing British backpacker Peter Falconio, repeatedly denying knowledge of where the victim's remains are located. The video was recorded weeks before Murdoch died of throat cancer whilst serving a life sentence. An officer is seen asking Murdoch to consider the whereabouts of Mr Falconio's body, to which Murdoch responded that he knew nothing and had maintained the same account for 22 years. The footage emerges ahead of the 25th anniversary of Mr Falconio's death on 14 July 2001.
Mr Falconio, 28 and from Huddersfield, was shot dead on a remote road near Barrow Creek in Australia's Northern Territory. His girlfriend, Joanne Lees, was kidnapped but escaped by hiding in scrub for several hours before flagging down a passing truck. Police said Murdoch provided no fresh information before his death and had never disclosed the location of Mr Falconio's remains. In a statement, Northern Territory Police said Murdoch's silence had denied the Falconio family the closure they deserved.
Mr Falconio's father, Luciano Falconio, stated he wished Murdoch had left something to assist in recovering his son's body. The release of the body-worn footage marks the first public disclosure of one of the final attempts by police to obtain information from Murdoch regarding the victim's whereabouts. The case has remained unresolved for over two decades, with Mr Falconio's body never recovered.
