NHS ANAESTHETIST SHORTAGE PREVENTS 1.5M OPERATIONS YEARLY

The NHS is unable to perform approximately 1.5 million operations annually due to a shortage of anaesthetists, according to a report by the Royal College of Anaesthetists. The shortfall prevents about 4,000 procedures from taking place each day across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Official figures suggest the UK has 2,256 fewer anaesthetists than required, representing a 16% gap in the speciality. The report, which officials at the Department of Health and Social Care are reviewing, identified the shortage as a significant obstacle to reducing waiting lists, which currently contain more than 8 million patients.

Anaesthetists work across multiple hospital settings including operating theatres, maternity wards, intensive care units and pain services. The largest staffing gap exists among consultant anaesthetists, the most senior grade, with a shortfall of approximately 1,640 posts accounting for 73% of the total deficit. The report found that whilst the number of anaesthetists has increased slightly in recent years, growth has not matched demand. According to the report's findings, insufficient training places represent the single largest cause of the shortage, though stress and workload also contribute to professionals leaving the field.

The shortage has direct consequences for patient care. The report indicates that the backlog is forcing hospitals to divert funding towards agency locums and reallocate staff to fill gaps, raising costs. Patients on waiting lists experience delays that the report describes as contributing to declines in their physical and mental health. Anaesthetists remain essential to NHS operations, as most surgical procedures cannot proceed without them, making the staffing crisis central to efforts to reduce waiting times and improve productivity.
