RED SOX REACH NEW YORK HOURS BEFORE GAME AFTER CHICAGO FLIGHT DELAYS

SAT 11 JUL 2026 US SPORTS

The Boston Red Sox arrived at Citi Field just over two hours before their series opener against the New York Mets on Friday following an extended travel disruption that stranded the team in Chicago overnight. The team had been scheduled to depart Chicago's Midway International Airport on Thursday evening after completing a series sweep of the Chicago White Sox, but thunderstorms in New York forced a delay. When the aircraft finally prepared to leave, a mechanical failure in the tow cart moving the plane on the runway caused further delays, leaving the team waiting for approximately six hours to determine whether an alternative aircraft could be arranged.

With no replacement plane available, the Red Sox decided to return to Chicago at approximately 1 a.m. and spend the night in two downtown hotels. Travel operations head Mark Cacciatore secured accommodation for the team. Interim manager Chad Tracy acknowledged the setback upon arrival in New York, stating the team was present and ready to compete. This marked the second occasion in fewer than two weeks that flight and travel complications had disrupted the Red Sox's schedule.

Despite the circumstances and minimal preparation time, the Red Sox defeated the Mets 6-2 in the rescheduled series opener, which began at 7:50 p.m., 35 minutes later than originally scheduled. The team entered the game having won eight of their previous ten matches. According to reporting, Tracy credited the team's personnel for managing the logistical challenges and enabling the squad to compete on short notice.
