OPENAI MOVES CHATGPT BROWSER INTO REDESIGNED DESKTOP APP

FRI 10 JUL 2026 AI

OpenAI announced plans to discontinue its Atlas browser on 9 August as part of the release of ChatGPT Work, according to reporting on the decision. The company confirmed that browser functionality would remain available within a redesigned ChatGPT desktop application rather than as a standalone product. Users will be able to access the built-in browser through a shortcut in the top right of the interface or by pressing Ctrl, Alt and B simultaneously.

OpenAI disclosed in March that it had been developing a "super app" to consolidate ChatGPT, its Codex coding agent and Atlas browser into a single platform. The redesigned ChatGPT desktop app now allows users to converse with ChatGPT, delegate tasks to Codex and ChatGPT Work, and browse the web through integrated browser functionality. The company simultaneously released an update to its Chrome extension, which now functions as a competitor to Google's Gemini in Chrome and permits users to ask ChatGPT questions about webpage content.

The company also introduced a feature called Sites, which enables ChatGPT to generate web applications for personal use, including live dashboards, project trackers and interactive reports. OpenAI stated that the consolidation reflected its strategy to integrate multiple tools under unified products rather than abandoning browser functionality entirely. The shift represents a restructuring of how OpenAI delivers its browser capabilities across its product range.
