BRITISH ARMY SIGNS £2BN AI TRAINING CONTRACT

FRI 10 JUL 2026 EDUCATION

The Ministry of Defence announced a £2bn contract to introduce artificial intelligence into military training systems. Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis visited Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire to confirm the new training programme, which incorporates AI, advanced analytics and virtual environments. According to the MoD, the investment will prepare 60,000 soldiers annually using AI and analytics technology. Jarvis stated the investment responds to technological developments observed in Ukraine and elsewhere.

The contract is projected to create 270 jobs in Wiltshire and support 420 posts across the United Kingdom over 15 years, according to the MoD's announcement. One hundred apprenticeships will be developed through the investment in partnership with Wiltshire College and the University of Staffordshire, covering disciplines including data modelling and project management. The new system will employ simulation, live systems and analytics to enable soldiers to train anywhere at any time, the MoD said. Jarvis, a former Army officer previously based in Wiltshire, met with soldiers during his visit and observed their latest equipment.

The MoD stated the training system would use AI to replicate modern warfare complexity, identify patterns, monitor performance and support decision-making. According to the MoD, the new technology will contribute to increasing Armed Forces readiness and advancing military transformation. Jarvis told the BBC that the investment ensures soldiers receive training with "state-of-the-art technology" to make training "as realistic as possible" and that "everyone is properly prepared".
