MANCHESTER CITY SIGN ENGLAND DEFENDER CHARLES FROM CHELSEA FOR £500,000
Manchester City have signed England international Niamh Charles from Chelsea for £500,000 on a three-year contract. Charles, a left-back, departs Chelsea after six years at the club, during which she made 173 appearances. The 27-year-old won five Women's Super League titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups with Chelsea, and was part of the squad that reached the Women's Champions League final in 2021 under Emma Hayes, losing to Barcelona.
Charles holds 34 caps for the England national team and scored a penalty in the shootout victory over Spain in the Euro 2025 final. She began her career at Liverpool before joining Chelsea. Manchester City director of football Therese Sjogran stated that Charles's experience at the highest level strengthens the squad following the club's first WSL title in a decade, won in May. Charles replaces Spain full-back Leila Ouahabi, who left for Chicago Stars FC, and will wear the number 21 shirt.
City have also signed England forward Beth Mead from Arsenal this transfer window and completed a new four-year contract with top scorer Khadija Shaw in May. Charles's move comes as Chelsea signs Republic of Ireland international Katie McCabe from Arsenal. City are adding squad depth as they pursue challenges in the WSL and European competition.
