BANK OF ENGLAND ECONOMIST SAYS INTEREST RATES MAY RISE

THU 09 JUL 2026 ECONOMY

Interest rates may need to increase during the current year to control inflation, according to Huw Pill, chief economist at the Bank of England. Pill told the Walescast podcast that the economy's growth capacity has diminished compared to historical levels. He is one of nine members of the UK who determine the Bank of England's interest rate, a decision that influences mortgage costs and the pace at which prices rise.

Pill sits on the Monetary Policy Committee, which decides whether to adjust the Bank of England interest rate. The rate affects borrowing costs, savings returns and inflation control. The Bank of England targets inflation of 2 per cent, though recorded inflation currently stands at 2.8 per cent. Pill voted in favour of an interest rate increase in June, placing him in a minority among committee members at that time. He stated that inflation has remained above the Bank's target for 53 months out of his 56 months in post, and attributed this partly to overoptimistic assessments of the economy's underlying growth potential.

Pill identified productivity, which measures work efficiency, as a constraint on UK economic performance. Wales faces particular challenges in this regard, recording productivity around 15 per cent lower than the UK average and the lowest among the four home nations. Pill said that improving productivity in Wales is essential to raising living standards, citing infrastructure development and economic connectivity as potential solutions.
