ERIKSEN TO UNDERGO REHABILITATION IN DENMARK AFTER COLLAPSE

THU 09 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

Christian Eriksen will begin individual rehabilitation in Denmark following a collapse during a friendly match against Ukraine in Odense last month. The midfielder, who plays for German club Wolfsburg, collapsed during the 65th minute of the match, which was subsequently abandoned. Eriksen was able to walk from the field after the incident. Wolfsburg confirmed that discussions with managing director Dieter Hecking led to the decision for Eriksen to complete his rehabilitation programme in his native country.

Eriksen was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) — a type of pacemaker — following cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 match against Finland in 2021. He stated that last month's incident "was a different situation from what happened in 2021" and noted that his ICD "did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it". Eriksen said he was "doing well" and at home with his family. The ICD is a device roughly the size of a mobile phone with thin wires connecting to the heart area, and can function either as a mini defibrillator or send regular electrical signals if the heart beats too slowly.

Wolfsburg stated it remains in regular contact with Eriksen and the doctors overseeing his treatment, and continues to wish him well with his rehabilitation. The Premier League and Bundesliga both permit players with an ICD to compete, though Italian Serie A rules previously prevented Eriksen from playing for Inter Milan after his 2021 cardiac arrest. He resumed his career with Brentford in 2022 before joining Manchester United and later Wolfsburg in September 2025.
