ANDY BURNHAM APOLOGISES FOR LABOUR'S GAZA RESPONSE

THU 09 JUL 2026 UK POLITICS

Andy Burnham has apologised for Labour's initial response to Israel's military action in Gaza, stating the party "didn't get it right" and must "do better" under his leadership. Burnham, described as prime minister-in-waiting, told the Guardian he would increase pressure on the Israeli government through further sanctions on individuals and entities, and potentially through bans on trade in goods from illegal settlements. He acknowledged that many voters on Labour's progressive wing have left the party over its position on Israel and Palestine. Burnham stated the UK was too slow to call for a ceasefire and that Labour's response had "too often not been good enough".

Burnham stopped short of describing events in Gaza as genocide, a position demanded by some on the left. He said there was "increasing evidence" that war crimes had been committed, but stated it was for international courts rather than politicians to make formal determinations. He expressed being "absolutely appalled" by the destruction in Gaza and called for accountability for the suffering experienced by Palestinians. His remarks contrast with earlier statements by Labour leader Keir Starmer, who said in October 2023 that Israel "has the right" to withhold power and water from Gaza—a position that angered many Muslim and progressive voters.

Burnham's apology addresses concerns among Labour voters on the progressive wing who have questioned the party's Middle East stance. His intervention signals a potential shift in approach should Labour assume office. The timing of Burnham's statement comes as Starmer faced criticism for taking nearly 10 days to clarify his October 2023 remarks on Gaza.
