JOEY MCGUIRE DEFENDS TEXAS TECH OVER SORSBY GAMBLING SCANDAL
Joey McGuire, head coach of Texas Tech, has responded to criticism directed at the university following the Brendan Sorsby gambling scandal. McGuire stated that conference officials and athletic directors were among those who spoke most about the matter. He said Texas Tech supported its players throughout the controversy and took no action beyond that support.
McGuire challenged critics who invoked integrity in their commentary on the situation, citing a principle from his former principal Harry Miller about examining one's own conduct before criticising others. He acknowledged concerns about gambling and the integrity of American football but maintained that Texas Tech's handling of the matter was appropriate. McGuire expressed regret that university president Schovanec and athletic director Kirby Hocutt had to address the scandal.
The Big 12 and Texas Tech held a meeting at the Cattlemen's Steakhouse last week to begin addressing the fallout from the controversy. Texas Tech booster Cody Campbell characterised the conversation as positive. McGuire indicated that recovery from the incident would require considerable time.
