NEWCASTLE SIGN AJAX MIDFIELDER SEAN STEUR FOR £23M

Newcastle United have signed midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax in a deal valued at up to £23m. The 18-year-old arrived on Tyneside on Wednesday evening, underwent a medical examination and completed the transfer. He has committed to a five-year contract extending to 2031.

Steur became a regular starter for Ajax during the second half of last season, playing in the De Klassieker match against Feyenoord at age 17. According to Opta data, among Eredivisie midfielders aged 18 or under at the start of the campaign, Steur ranked first for chances created with 15, total carries with 231, and duel success at 56.8 per cent. He ranked second for passes (623), passing accuracy (89.7 per cent), tackles (20), possession won (49) and duels won (46).

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe described Steur as a "top young prospect" with characteristics to become a valuable player for the club over several years. The signing represents part of Newcastle's summer recruitment strategy focused on younger players with potential, alongside fellow signings Bazoumana Toure and Ewen Jaouen, all aged 20 or under. Steur stated his move from Ajax, where he joined aged seven, fulfilled his ambition to play in the Premier League.
