MARKS & SPENCER STAGES LONDON FASHION WEEK DEBUT FOR 100TH ANNIVERSARY

THU 09 JUL 2026 COMPANIES

Marks & Spencer will present a catwalk show at London Fashion Week in September to mark its centenary in the fashion industry. The British retailer will showcase new women's and menswear collections on the runway, with the event livestreamed for remote viewers. Stuart Machin, chief executive of M&S, stated the decision represented an opportunity to "showcase our designs on fashion's global stage" as part of efforts to establish the company as a fashion destination for high-street shoppers. The collections shown will be available to purchase immediately online and in larger stores, unlike most luxury brands where catwalk pieces typically reach retail months later.

M&S has previously worked to reshape its public image in fashion. In 2016, then-chief executive Steve Rowe characterised the retailer as having a reputation for "frumpiness". Machin, who became chief executive in 2022, has pursued a strategy focused on appealing to younger, fashion-conscious customers. Maddy Evans, who joined as head of womenswear in 2019, has overseen the introduction of trend-driven monthly product releases designed to attract shoppers seeking new items and pieces likely to gain attention on social media platforms. Laura Weir, chief executive of the British Fashion Council, described M&S as "one of the great icons of the British high street" and noted its role in the nation's retail and cultural history.

Catherine Shuttleworth, chief executive of retail consultancy Savvy Marketing, characterised M&S's London Fashion Week participation as demonstrating "confidence around its fashion credentials". The move positions the high-street retailer alongside established luxury brands including Burberry and Alexander McQueen at this autumn's fashion week schedule.
