SIZEWELL B NUCLEAR PLANT EXTENDED TO 2055 IN £800M DEAL
Sizewell B, a nuclear power station near Leiston in Suffolk, will continue operating for a further 20 years under an agreement reached between its owner EDF and the government. The plant, which began operation in 1995 and was scheduled to close in 2035, will now remain open until 2055. Robert Gunn, station director at Sizewell B, stated the deal would protect hundreds of jobs at the facility. EDF has committed approximately £800m to plant investment, with the agreement expected to be finalised later in the year.
Sizewell B is the United Kingdom's only pressurised water reactor and supplies electricity to more than two million homes, accounting for 3% of the nation's energy generation. EDF currently employs 620 staff and around 300 contractors at the site. According to EDF, the extension would generate sufficient electricity to meet the needs of every home in East Anglia for nearly 45 years. The company plans to undertake major plant modifications and upgrades during the extended operational period.
Patrick Vallance, minister for science, innovation, research and nuclear, described the extension as "good news" and characterised extending the life of a nuclear plant as routine practice. The government stated the move would provide two and a half million homes' worth of electricity and support 900 jobs. Chris Wilson, representing campaign group Together Against Sizewell C (TASC), stated the extension created a "multi-generational financial and environmental liability" and criticised the government's continued reliance on nuclear power. TASC highlighted concerns about nuclear waste management and the vulnerability of nuclear facilities to global instability.
