NEARLY 400 NURSING GRADUATES IN WALES WITHOUT NHS JOBS

Almost 400 nursing and midwifery graduates in Wales remain without NHS positions following the conclusion of the first round of job matching, according to Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW). James Buchan, a senior fellow at The Health Foundation, has warned that the NHS faces potential long-term damage if newly-qualified healthcare workers continue to struggle finding employment after graduation. Buchan stated that the situation presents a "reputational risk" to the NHS, as prospective students may no longer view healthcare careers as a reliable path into employment. Final year nursing students have expressed concerns about the job shortage, with some questioning their decision to pursue their degrees.

Mia Edgeworth, a final year nursing student at the University of South Wales in Cardiff, is among 306 nurses without secured positions ahead of her August graduation. Universities had previously told prospective students that employment was guaranteed upon course completion, according to accounts from graduates. Buchan noted that newly-qualified healthcare workers expected to transition relatively smoothly into careers and could become discouraged by the lack of positions, potentially considering alternative paths. He stated that the NHS requires "a good pipeline of newly trained health professionals coming into employment" to sustain service delivery, and that blockages in this pipeline create service challenges.

The Welsh government stated it was working with universities, health boards and graduates to facilitate employment. Buchan said existing policy had focused on addressing consequences after graduates struggled to find jobs, rather than preventing the crisis earlier. Some paramedic graduates have indicated they may relocate abroad to pursue their careers. The warning underscores the impact of the employment shortage on both the healthcare workforce and prospective students considering entry into the profession.
