A U.S. District Judge has approved a $1.5 million penalty against Elon Musk to settle a Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit. U.S. District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan confirmed the court's acceptance of the settlement on Wednesday. The judge stated in her court opinion that she held "significant misgivings" about the settlement terms. The settlement concerns Musk's Twitter investment, according to the SEC legal action.

Judge Sooknanan's opinion indicated that the question of whether the settlement represents a fair outcome is a matter for public determination through the electoral process. The judge's written reasoning suggested reservations about the settlement's adequacy, whilst still permitting it to proceed. The court's approval brings the SEC's legal action to a formal conclusion.

The settlement now stands as a resolved matter in the SEC's enforcement action against Musk. The judge's acknowledgement of her own reservations whilst approving the settlement places on record her doubts about the arrangement's fairness. The $1.5 million penalty represents the financial outcome of the dispute between the SEC and Musk over the Twitter investment matter.
