KATIE COURIC EXPERIENCES TEMPORARY MEMORY LOSS AT ASPEN IDEAS FESTIVAL

THU 09 JUL 2026

Katie Couric, a journalist, experienced transient global amnesia during the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado in June, resulting in a loss of approximately seven hours of memory. Couric shared details of the incident in a Substack post, stating that she had no recollection of events between approximately noon and 7 p.m. on a Saturday. She recalled consuming lunch at a hot dog stand before the memory loss occurred, and said she retained no memory of two panel discussions she participated in that day, despite her husband John Molner reporting that observers did not notice obvious signs of distress during her performance.

At an Aspen hospital, medical staff initiated stroke protocol after Couric demonstrated confusion about basic information, including the current month, year and U.S. president. She believed the year was 2024 and that Joe Biden held the presidency at the time. Couric also could not recall having a three-week-old granddaughter and forgot the name of her daughter's boyfriend. Hospital staff noted that she reintroduced herself to nurses with each entry into her room.

An MRI scan showed no evidence of stroke, leading doctors to diagnose transient global amnesia, a temporary and sudden loss of memory. Couric wrote in her post that she was relieved the condition was not more severe. She stated that the seven missing hours from that Saturday in June would remain permanently absent from her memory.
