X TO SEND DIRECT MESSAGES ABOUT CORRECTED POSTS
X will send users direct messages when posts they have engaged with receive Community Notes, according to Elon Musk. The social platform aims to make its crowd-sourced corrections more visible to users who have interacted with potentially misleading content. Currently, notifications about Community Notes appear within the X application or on the web after a note has been assessed as helpful and visible for 24 hours. Musk did not specify a release date for the update.
Community Notes, originally launched as Birdwatch in 2020, became X's primary misinformation-prevention tool in 2022. The feature allows users to collaboratively add context or corrections to posts they believe contain false or misleading information. X has also permitted Community Notes contributors to request AI-generated notes rather than writing corrections manually. The platform adopted this crowd-sourced approach after Musk acquired it, describing the method as an alternative to platform-driven content moderation.
Research published in Nature Communications in May 2026 examined 237,180 community-noted posts and found that whilst Community Notes reduced the spread of corrected content, the corrections frequently arrived after the initial viral phase of a post's distribution. Meta adopted a similar community notes system across its applications in 2025 after ending its US fact-checking programme. The effectiveness of Community Notes in preventing misinformation spread remains contested among researchers and observers.
