MICROSOFT INTRODUCES CLOUD REBUILD FOR WINDOWS 11 RECOVERY
Microsoft has introduced a new recovery feature for Windows 11 that installs a complete operating system directly from cloud servers, eliminating the need for separate installation media. The tool, called Cloud Rebuild, operates even when PCs are corrupted or fail to boot. The feature is currently available as a Windows 11 Insider preview ahead of wider testing and general availability.
Cloud Rebuild downloads the latest compatible Windows image and device-specific drivers from remote servers, removing the requirement for users to create bootable USB installers or manage ISO files. Existing PC resetting tools can download Windows from the cloud, but recovery often fails if local Windows files are damaged or missing; Cloud Rebuild addresses this limitation by functioning without reliance on local files. The feature includes all necessary components for a complete fresh installation, provided the device maintains network connectivity.
Microsoft stated that remote initiation from enterprise endpoint management solutions, such as Microsoft Intune, will become available in a later release. The company noted that some features, user experience elements and command-line options may change before general availability. Microsoft has not provided a timeline for the feature's full release. The company indicated that the tool brings Windows closer to recovery models that macOS users have accessed through Internet Recovery since 2011.
