DJOKOVIC FINED $7.5K FOR AUDIBLE OBSCENITY AT WIMBLEDON
Novak Djokovic has been fined $7,500 by the All England Club for an "audible obscenity" offence during his Round of 16 match against Roman Safiullin at Wimbledon. The fine was issued following Djokovic's emotional outbursts during the fourth-round contest, according to a disciplinary list released by SW19 officials on Tuesday evening. An umpire issued Djokovic a formal warning after he shouted expletives during the match. Djokovic went on to defeat Safiullin and subsequently secured his place in the semi-finals by beating Felix Auger-Aliassime.
The outburst occurred after Djokovic was broken and fell 2-0 behind in the third set, at which point his frustration became evident. Later in the same set, Djokovic struck a tennis ball away angrily after Safiullin hit a powerful forehand near him. According to the All England Club's records, Djokovic holds seven Wimbledon titles and is currently ranked world No. 7.
Sixteen other players were also sanctioned in the same disciplinary update, with fines issued across qualifying, singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions. Gilles Arnaud Bailly received a $2,500 fine for audible obscenity, whilst Henrique Rocha was fined $2,500 for racket abuse during qualifying. The scale of disciplinary action reflected multiple conduct issues addressed by All England Club officials during the tournament.
