QATAR AIRWAYS LAUNCHES FACIAL RECOGNITION BOARDING SYSTEM
Qatar Airways has introduced a facial recognition system called Fast Pass at Hamad International Airport in Doha that permits passengers to use their faces as boarding passes. The biometric technology allows travellers to move through self-boarding gates, airport security checkpoints and self-service bag drop facilities without presenting a paper or digital boarding pass. Fast Pass can be activated through the Qatar Airways mobile application after check-in or at self-service kiosks within the airport. Passengers must still carry their passports for immigration procedures in case biometric cameras cannot verify their identity.
The system operates by sharing journey data with the airport once Fast Pass is enabled, creating a digital document linked to biometric information, baggage details and travel plans. Data stored by the airport is deleted 24 hours after a passenger's flight departs, whilst information retained on the passenger's phone allows the system to be used across multiple Qatar Airways journeys from Hamad International without requiring repeated setup. Hamad International stated that the biometric verification process takes seconds and reduces document checks and waiting times, particularly during peak travel periods. Participation in Fast Pass remains optional, with conventional boarding pass processing continuing to be available.
Hamad International announced plans to explore partnerships with other airlines to expand Fast Pass technology to additional passengers in future. The system currently operates only at Hamad International, meaning Qatar Airways flights departing from other airports still require traditional boarding passes. Other airlines and airports have previously implemented comparable biometric systems, including Emirates at Dubai International Airport and Face Express at Haneda and Narita airports in Japan.
