JAKARTA LANDFILL FIRE BURNS FOR EIGHTH DAY, DISPLACES HUNDREDS

WED 08 JUL 2026

A fire at Jatiwaringin landfill on the outskirts of Jakarta has burned for eight days, spreading across more than 15 hectares and forcing hundreds of local residents to evacuate. The blaze began on 30 June, initially triggered by a small spark that was intensified by strong winds and spread to areas where rubbish was piled high and difficult for firefighters to access. Firefighters have deployed helicopters, water tankers, bulldozers and drones in efforts to extinguish the fire, with hopes of containment by the end of the week.

The fire has produced thick, toxic smoke that has inundated surrounding residential areas. According to measurements from the Ministry of Environment, air quality around the landfill has reached hazardous levels, although the severity has eased in recent days. Local health authorities have examined at least 234 residents reporting respiratory illnesses because of the blaze. One resident reported that toxic smoke flooded her house, forcing her to flee with her child, whilst another said she was prohibited from returning home due to toxic gas in the air. Hundreds of displaced residents have sought refuge in a shelter established by local government.

Environmental activists have characterised the landfill fire as an "ecological disaster resulting from systemic negligence" and described it as one symptom of a growing waste crisis in Indonesia. Authorities have stated that containment of the blaze is achievable within the coming days, though the scale of the evacuation and health impact underlines the broader challenges facing waste management in the region.
