GENO AURIEMMA ACKNOWLEDGES PERSONAL ANIMOSITIES TARGETING CAITLIN CLARK

WED 08 JUL 2026

Geno Auriemma stated that Caitlin Clark faces unfair physical treatment in the WNBA due to personal animosities among players. Speaking on the Sports Media Podcast with Richard Deitsch, Auriemma said: "I do think there are some personal animosities in that league where people are going to take a shot at her unfairly." He added that players exist in the league who would target Clark consistently. Auriemma noted that if his assessment were incorrect, more people would defend Clark publicly, and he himself does not coach or play in the league.

Clark has suffered multiple flagrant fouls during her rookie season with the Indiana Fever. Sophie Cunningham acknowledged that physical plays occur against Clark in every game and stated the league and referees take minimal action. Cunningham previously disclosed that the Phoenix Mercury locker room intended to show Clark "what the W really is" when she entered the league. Fever coach Stephanie White termed Clark's officiating treatment "absolutely unacceptable," and the Fever submitted multiple plays for league review in 2024 with limited results. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and Sue Bird characterised the league as inherently physical.

Auriemma characterised claims that Clark is targeted as plausible but not automatically established as fact. He simultaneously criticised Clark's supporters, calling them "delusional" for overstating her impact in the league. Auriemma stated the matter "shouldn't be a national referendum," despite having made his own public statement on the subject. Indiana Fever stakeholders have raised concerns about Clark's treatment through official channels prior to Auriemma's comments.
