SWITZERLAND BEATS COLOMBIA 4-3 ON PENALTIES TO REACH QUARTER-FINALS
Switzerland advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout. The match went to penalties following a drawn result after normal and extra time. Switzerland converted four of their penalty attempts whilst Colombia converted three.
The shootout decided the outcome of a closely contested Round of 16 tie between the two nations. Both teams had progressed through earlier rounds to reach this stage of the tournament. The penalty shootout is a standard method used in football to determine a winner when matches remain level after the full 120 minutes of play.
Switzerland will now progress to face an opponent in the quarter-final stage. Colombia's campaign in the World Cup 2026 concluded with their elimination at the Round of 16. The quarter-finals will continue with the remaining eight teams competing to advance further in the tournament.
