IRELAND BANS ISRAELI MINISTERS BEN-GVIR AND SMOTRICH FROM ENTRY
Ireland has imposed travel bans on two senior Israeli government ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. The Irish government confirmed the bans prevent both ministers from entering Irish territory. The measure targets Ben-Gvir, who serves as National Security Minister, and Smotrich, who serves as Finance Minister. Ireland has formally notified the relevant authorities of the restrictions.
Both Ben-Gvir and Smotrich hold significant roles within the Israeli coalition government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The two ministers have faced criticism from multiple European governments over their positions on Israeli military operations and settlement policy in the West Bank. Ireland has been among the more vocal European Union member states in expressing opposition to Israeli government policy in Gaza and the occupied territories. Ireland, alongside Norway and Spain, formally recognised Palestinian statehood in May 2024.
The bans represent a direct government action rather than a diplomatic protest or statement. Ireland's move signals a willingness to apply concrete measures against individual foreign government officials. The decision adds to existing tensions between Dublin and Jerusalem, which have intensified since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October 2023. No travel engagements by either minister to Ireland had been publicly scheduled at the time of the announcement.
