EU DELAYS TRAVEL SYSTEM ROLLOUT AFTER BORDER QUEUE PROBLEMS

TUE 07 JUL 2026

The European Union has delayed the next phase of its new Entry/Exit System (EES) following technical issues and extended queues at borders, according to sources familiar with the decision. The system, which uses fingerprinting and facial recognition technology, was scheduled for further rollout but will now be postponed. The delay comes as airports and airlines have raised concerns about implementation problems ahead of the peak summer holiday season.

EU officials have acknowledged that the EES is "not perfect", with sources identifying approximately 20 locations experiencing significant queue disruptions. Despite these difficulties, the EU has rejected calls from airports and airlines to suspend the biometric border controls entirely. The system was introduced following the United Kingdom's departure from the European Union and represents a shift in how the bloc manages entry and exit data for travellers.

The decision to delay rather than suspend the system indicates the EU intends to continue implementation once technical issues are resolved. Airlines and airports have expressed concerns about the capacity of the system to handle the volume of travellers during summer months. The EU's rejection of a full suspension suggests officials believe the problems can be addressed through the postponement period.
