CATNIP LOTION AS EFFECTIVE AS DEET AT REPELLING MOSQUITOES

TUE 07 JUL 2026

Researchers conducting trials in Uganda have found that catnip lotion repels mosquitoes as effectively as Deet, the artificial chemical used globally in insect repellents. Catnip, known scientifically as Nepeta cataria, is a common herb from the mint family. The study tested a homegrown oil formulation against the established synthetic alternative. According to the research, the natural lotion matched Deet's performance in field conditions.

Catnip has long been recognised for its effects on cats, but its properties as a mosquito repellent extend beyond anecdotal observation. The herb belongs to the mint family and grows readily in many regions. The trials took place in Uganda, where mosquito-borne illness represents a significant public health concern. The use of a locally-sourced, inexpensive alternative could reduce reliance on imported chemical formulations.

The findings suggest potential applications for affordable mosquito control in regions where Deet-based products are costly or difficult to access. Researchers have demonstrated measurable efficacy through controlled testing rather than theoretical assessment. Further development of catnip-based repellents could offer communities a cost-effective option for disease vector management. The study indicates that traditional plant-based approaches warrant continued scientific investigation alongside synthetic compounds.
