NIGEL FARAGE RESIGNS AS MP TO TRIGGER CLACTON BYELECTION

TUE 07 JUL 2026 UK POLITICS

Nigel Farage announced his resignation as Member of Parliament for Clacton. The Reform UK leader said he would fight a byelection in the constituency. Farage revealed he is under investigation by the parliamentary standards watchdog over undeclared gifts. The investigation centres on financial assistance he received before becoming an MP, including gifts from crypto gambler and fraudster George Cottrell.

Farage characterised his decision as defiance against what he termed "the establishment". He stated the byelection would demonstrate public support for his continued representation. He denied reports that he was resigning to pursue interests in the United States or return to business. Farage accused the media of a "pile-on" and claimed the establishment sought to prevent a Reform government from taking office.

The resignation follows increased scrutiny of Farage's financial arrangements. The parliamentary standards investigation represents a second such probe into his conduct. Farage stated he would not accept judgement by the media and chose instead to seek renewed electoral validation. No date for the Clacton byelection has been confirmed.
