INTERSTELLAR COMET 3I/ATLAS MAY BE THREE TIMES OLDER THAN EARTH
Astronomers have determined that the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS could be approximately three times older than Earth, according to a new study. The comet's composition and age had previously remained unclear to researchers. The findings represent a significant development in understanding this object that originated outside our solar system.
The study analysed data relating to 3I/ATLAS to establish its characteristics and chronology. The comet is confirmed to be interstellar in nature, meaning it originated beyond our solar system. Researchers used various observational methods to investigate the composition of the object, which had been a matter of scientific uncertainty until this analysis.
The research demonstrates the growing capability of astronomers to characterise distant celestial bodies with greater precision. Understanding the age and composition of interstellar objects provides insight into the formation and evolution of material beyond Earth's solar system. The findings from this study contribute to broader scientific knowledge about the origins and nature of cometary bodies that occasionally pass through our cosmic neighbourhood.
