TONALI COMPLETES RECORD £92.5M MOVE TO TOTTENHAM FROM NEWCASTLE

MON 06 JUL 2026

Sandro Tonali has joined Tottenham from Newcastle United for a club-record initial fee of £92.5m, with potential add-ons worth a further £7.5m. The 26-year-old Italian midfielder signed a six-year contract after Tottenham's opening bid of around £80m was rejected. Tonali stated that manager Roberto De Zerbi's presentation to him lasted close to two hours and proved decisive in his choice to move to the London club. He said the conversation about Tottenham's plans, fanbase, stadium and playing style felt like "magic" and left him certain he should join.

Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023 for £55m and spent three seasons with the Magpies. He received a 10-month ban from the Italian Football Federation for breaching betting rules shortly after his arrival but subsequently became a key player. Newcastle won the Carabao Cup in 2025, their first trophy in 70 years, with Tonali contributing to that success. In a social media post, Tonali thanked Eddie Howe, Newcastle's manager, for being a "guiding figure" and said the city had given him "more than football".

De Zerbi, who took charge of Tottenham at the end of March and narrowly prevented Premier League relegation, described Tonali as a "special player". De Zerbi stated he had followed Tonali since his time in Brescia's youth system, his hometown club. The signing follows Tottenham's recruitment of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85m, the previous club-record fee.
