HAIRCUT 100 FRONTMAN RECALLS WRITING FANTASTIC DAY

MON 06 JUL 2026

Phil Smith, frontman of Haircut 100, has described the creation of Fantastic Day, the song that led to the band's record deal. According to Smith, the track was written whilst he stood in front of a chocolate-brown wall bearing the names of his favourite punk bands. Smith stated that the physical circumstances of writing shaped the final composition, suggesting that sitting down would have produced a different result. The song remained a constant element across multiple musical styles the band experimented with during their early period.

Smith outlined the band's approach to their early catalogue, noting that Haircut 100 "hopped on every bandwagon going – punk, ska, mod, everything" in their formative years. Fantastic Day existed as a composition across these various styles, with an original version that drew influence from Talking Heads. Smith expressed a preference for that earlier iteration over the version that ultimately secured the band's signing. The stylistic evolution of the track reflected the band's broader musical exploration at the time.

Smith characterised his feelings about Fantastic Day with ambivalence, stating "The song got us signed but I hated it". His recollection places the composition at a pivotal moment in Haircut 100's career, despite his personal dissatisfaction with the final recorded version. The remarks offer insight into the creative tensions between commercial success and artistic preference that shaped the band's breakthrough period.
