WEGOVY PILL LAUNCHES IN UK PHARMACIES AMID COUNTERFEITING CONCERNS
Wegovy, the first approved GLP-1 pill for weight loss in the United Kingdom, became available in pharmacies from Monday following regulatory approval in June. Initial doses of 1.5mg and 4mg are accessible to eligible patients through weight management programmes in selected pharmacies. The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) survey found that 76 per cent of pharmacies anticipate a significant increase in patients seeking the pill. Nearly half of pharmacies reported already experiencing a surge in enquiries about the medication.
The NPA chairman, Olivier Picard, stated that the NHS rollout remains extremely slow and called for wider community pharmacy involvement in distribution. Pharmacies are preparing for substantial demand as the medication becomes available across the country. The NPA raised concerns about a potential rise in counterfeit versions of the pill being sold on the black market. The association advised patients to obtain the drug only through regulated pharmacies after undergoing a thorough consultation.
The launch represents a significant expansion in weight loss treatment options available on the NHS in Britain. Wegovy had previously been available only as an injection. The availability of a pill form may increase accessibility for patients who prefer oral medication. The NPA's emphasis on regulated pharmacy dispensing reflects efforts to protect patients from unsafe counterfeit products circulating outside the formal healthcare system.
