BUCKINGHAM PALACE WITHDRAWS HARRY'S INVITATION TO STAY DURING UK VISIT

MON 06 JUL 2026 ROYAL

Buckingham Palace has withdrawn an invitation for Prince Harry to stay at the royal residence during an upcoming visit to London and Birmingham, according to statements made on Monday. A spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex said the offer from the King had been "withdrawn at the last moment" and described the decision as "disappointing". The palace stated that appropriate hospitality and staffing provision was no longer available, citing the need for minimum notice to host the prince appropriately at a royal residence.

Harry is scheduled to visit the UK for charity engagements including promotion of the Invictus Games. According to reported accounts, the duke initially declined the palace's offer on Saturday on behalf of himself, his wife and children, before reversing that decision later the same day and requesting accommodation for himself alone. The palace indicated that the longstanding legal case involving Harry against Associated Newspapers had complicated the matter and could compromise the King's constitutional position. A ruling in that high court case is expected on Tuesday.

The dispute marks a fresh disagreement between Harry and his family. The buildup to his trip has previously been overshadowed by a separate dispute with the government over security arrangements. A spokesperson for Harry said the prince was aware of multiple briefings from Buckingham Palace suggesting he had not accepted the accommodation offer, and noted that the palace had made no public statement about the withdrawal until after his spokesperson's announcement.
