GAUFF BEATS BENCIC TWO MINUTES BEFORE WIMBLEDON CURFEW
Coco Gauff defeated Belinda Bencic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at Wimbledon in a match that finished at 10.58pm, two minutes before the tournament's 11pm curfew. The American, seeded seventh, reached the quarter-finals for the first time after the latest start in Wimbledon history at 8.40pm. Gauff dropped the first set but recovered to secure victory against the Swiss competitor. The 22-year-old will face fellow American Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals.
Gauff struck nine double faults during the match, including five in a single game during the opening set. Despite this, she produced high-quality ball-striking throughout and saved break points in her opening two service games. Bencic, a former Olympic champion and semi-finalist at Wimbledon last year, mounted a comeback after Gauff established an early 3-0 lead. The pair had two hours and 20 minutes to complete their match from the official 8.40pm start time.
After the match, Gauff said she was "not used to racing against time" and that she had watched the clock during her final service game. She described the victory as her best performance in the tournament so far and acknowledged it was her most dramatic match. Gauff noted that she attempted a serve-and-volley approach on the match point to finish quickly, converting it at 10.58pm to secure her place in the next round.
