BYRON BUXTON LEAVES TWINS GAME WITH HIP INJURY
Byron Buxton departed Minnesota Twins' 6-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday after sustaining a hip injury in the first inning. Buxton attempted to steal second base during an at-bat and was tagged out by Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe. The play marked the first time Buxton had been caught stealing in his last 38 attempts. Rookie Kyler Fedko replaced him, and Buxton did not return to the match.
Buxton had previously dealt with right hip impingement and missed four consecutive games before returning on Saturday. After the game, Buxton stated that his hip felt "a little sore" but that he chose to leave the match to avoid further setback. He said: "I don't want to set myself back farther, just in case I was trying to push through it or whatever the situation was." Buxton was named a starter for the All-Star Game on Saturday and holds a .271 batting average with 25 home runs and 45 RBIs this season.
The Twins have won their first series at Yankee Stadium since 2014, following victories on both Saturday and Sunday. Pitcher Joe Ryan recorded nine strikeouts across seven scoreless innings in Sunday's win. Minnesota's record now stands at 44-47, placing them third in the AL Central division, 3.5 games behind first place.
