NHS TREATS DEMENTIA PATIENTS AS SECOND-CLASS CITIZENS, ALZHEIMER'S SOCIETY SAYS

SUN 05 JUL 2026 NHS

Michelle Dyson, identified as the boss of the Alzheimer's Society, has accused ministers of neglecting dementia care in the NHS. According to Dyson's statement, patients are frequently diagnosed and discharged with minimal support, receiving little more than a leaflet upon leaving hospital. Dyson characterised dementia as Britain's biggest killer and said the condition was being ignored by government.

The criticism centres on the pathway patients experience following diagnosis. Dyson's account suggests that families are sent home without substantive guidance or follow-up care arrangements. The Alzheimer's Society's position is that this approach leaves patients and their relatives without adequate resources to manage the condition in the community. No response from the Department of Health and Social Care has been reported.

Dyson's comments reflect concerns within dementia advocacy organisations about post-diagnostic support in the NHS. The statement highlights a gap between diagnosis and ongoing care provision. Whether the NHS or government will respond to these allegations remains unclear at this stage.
