EDWARDS SAYS ENGLAND WON BACK FANS DESPITE T20 FINAL LOSS
Charlotte Edwards, England's head coach, stated that the team had restored supporter confidence despite suffering a heavy defeat to Australia in the Women's T20 World Cup final at Lord's. A crowd of 28,887 attended the match, where both teams arrived undefeated. England set Australia a target of 151 runs to win, but Australia reached the mark in 17.1 overs. Beth Mooney scored 64 from 49 balls to lead Australia's successful chase. Edwards acknowledged that her side were outclassed on the day.
Edwards took the position following England's 16-0 defeat in the 2025 Ashes multi-format points series, during which the team faced criticism regarding fitness, fielding, attitude and public perception. She stated publicly that she intended to alter the narrative around the team. In comments to BBC Test Match Special after the final, Edwards said she was proud of her squad and the work carried out behind the scenes. She noted that supporters had returned to watch the team, which she described as outstanding.
Edwards stated that the team had succeeded in shifting conversation towards the cricket itself rather than fitness and fielding issues. She said England should not be discouraged by the loss, as Australia represented a very strong team that had dominated world cricket for years and England remained competitive. Edwards herself previously captained England to World Cup victory.
