EIGHT WOUNDED IN CONEY ISLAND FOURTH OF JULY SHOOTING
A shooting at a Fourth of July cookout near Coney Island beach in New York wounded eight people, including four children, according to police. The incident occurred on Saturday night in the courtyard of an apartment building approximately one block from the Coney Island boardwalk. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that one victim, a 21-year-old woman, remained in critical condition, whilst the other seven victims were described as stable and expected to survive.
The shooter, wearing a black mask, fired into the courtyard where a family had gathered for the celebration. Police recovered a firearm at the scene, though the suspect fled before officers arrived. The four children injured ranged in age from 6 to 14 years old. Tisch reported that no disturbances had been documented at the gathering prior to the shooting. The location lies near the site of the Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest, held earlier that day as part of Fourth of July festivities.
Police Commissioner Tisch did not provide details regarding a potential motive or the identity of the suspect as of Sunday. Investigations into the shooting remained ongoing at the time of reporting. The incident marked a shooting at a public holiday gathering in one of New York City's most visited neighbourhoods.
