DJOKOVIC REACHES WIMBLEDON QUARTER-FINALS WITH 106TH VICTORY
Novak Djokovic defeated Roman Safiullin 7-6 (6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 on Sunday to advance to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for the ninth consecutive year. The victory marked Djokovic's record 106th singles win at the tournament. The match lasted almost three and a half hours on Centre Court, with Djokovic acknowledging that Safiullin's aggressive play had unsettled him at times. Djokovic has now reached the quarter-finals of a major tournament 66 times in his career.
Safiullin, currently ranked 132nd but with a career-high ranking of 36th, competed closely throughout the match. He held two set points at 5-2 in the opening set before losing the tiebreak. Safiullin took the third set before Djokovic elevated his performance in the fourth set to clinch victory. After the match, Djokovic stated that he had struggled with consistency from the baseline and adjusted his tactics by mixing up his approach rather than remaining in extended rallies.
Djokovic remains in pursuit of a record-extending 25th grand slam title at 39 years old. When discussing his first week's performance at the tournament, he characterised his approach as "survive to thrive", suggesting he expects to improve as the competition progresses. Djokovic also acknowledged displaying emotional outbursts during the match, describing them as "meltdowns" and offering an apology for those moments.
