ZIMBABWE AND KYRGYZSTAN WIN UN SECURITY COUNCIL SEATS

FRI 05 JUN 2026 AFRICA

Zimbabwe and Kyrgyzstan have both secured seats on the United Nations Security Council. Zimbabwe won election to the council, as did Kyrgyzstan. The votes took place through the standard UN General Assembly election process. Both countries will join the council as non-permanent members.

Kyrgyzstan's election marks the first time the Central Asian nation has secured a seat on the Security Council since gaining independence. Zimbabwe's election represents a return to one of the UN's most powerful bodies. The Security Council holds primary responsibility for international peace and security under the UN Charter. Non-permanent members serve two-year terms and participate in binding resolutions on global conflicts and crises.

The Security Council consists of five permanent members — the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China — and ten elected non-permanent seats. New non-permanent members gain voting rights on resolutions, including those related to sanctions, peacekeeping operations, and the use of force. Kyrgyzstan's historic first membership gives Central Asia a direct voice in the council chamber. Zimbabwe's seat returns southern Africa a presence on the body.
