NHS APPROVES FIRST NEW OVARIAN CANCER TREATMENT IN TWO DECADES

FRI 05 JUN 2026 OTHER

The NHS has approved the first new ovarian cancer treatment in 20 years, marking a significant change in available care for patients in the United Kingdom. The treatment has been cleared for use across NHS services following a regulatory approval process. Hundreds of women in the UK are expected to benefit from access to the new option. The decision represents the first addition of this kind to ovarian cancer treatment on the NHS in two decades.

The approval ends a 20-year period during which no new treatments entered NHS use for ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is one of the most common gynaecological cancers in the UK, and treatment options have remained largely unchanged for a generation. The newly approved treatment has been described as a landmark development by those involved in its evaluation. Its inclusion on the NHS means eligible patients will be able to access it without private funding.

The rollout through the NHS will extend the treatment to hundreds of women across the UK. The approval opens a new phase of care for patients diagnosed with ovarian cancer who previously had limited options. Healthcare providers will now incorporate the treatment into existing clinical pathways. The decision sets a precedent for continued evaluation of emerging cancer therapies for NHS inclusion.
