NINE AFRICAN SIDES REACH WORLD CUP LAST 32 AFTER EXPANDED FORMAT

SAT 04 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

Nine African nations advanced from the group stage of the World Cup, according to reporting on the tournament's outcomes. The Confederation of African Football (Caf) had previously argued that five qualification slots were insufficient for its 54 member nations, representing only 9% of African football sides compared to 50% of South American members. The expanded 48-team tournament format granted Africa nine guaranteed slots plus the possibility of an additional place through intercontinental play-offs, which the Democratic Republic of the Congo claimed.

Europe's Union of European Football Associations (Uefa) progressed 13 sides to the last 32, whilst South America's Conmebol advanced five. Asia's confederation saw only Japan and Australia qualify, whilst the North and Central American confederation (Concacaf) advanced only its three host nations. The Confederation of African Football had expressed concern that poor performances by the expanded African contingent could have undermined arguments for increased representation; fewer than five African sides reaching the last 32 would have suggested overallocation of qualification places.

The outcome vindicated Caf's position that the continent's football warranted greater World Cup representation, according to analysis of the results. Tunisia's group-stage elimination was noted as among the poorest performances by any side in World Cup history. The question of whether Africa's success reflected genuine depth in continental football or merely benefited from the broader pyramid created by the expanded format remained contested among observers.
