SINNER REACHES WIMBLEDON LAST 16 WITH STRAIGHT-SETS WIN
Jannik Sinner defeated Jenson Brooksby in the third round at Wimbledon, advancing to the last 16 for the fifth consecutive year. The world No 1 won 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 13 minutes. Sinner will face Shintaro Mochizuki in the next round after the former junior champion defeated Rafael Jódar in four sets.
Sinner's performance showed marked improvement as the match progressed. In the opening set, he relied predominantly on baseline groundstrokes and rarely approached the net. During the second set, his tactics shifted; he won 11 consecutive points at the net and successfully served and volleyed four times. With a two-set advantage, Sinner returned to his baseline approach for the third set. One moment of vulnerability occurred when Brooksby broke his serve at 5-3 whilst Sinner was serving for the match, though Sinner recovered to secure victory on his third match point.
Sinner's progression comes as Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion, remains absent through injury, strengthening Sinner's position as tournament favourite. After the match, Sinner acknowledged areas requiring improvement if he is to progress further in the tournament, stating he was "very happy about the win" and committed to improving daily. His advancement follows recent comments in which Sinner indicated that increased net play and unpredictability would help him compete more effectively against Alcaraz and other opponents.
