CAITLIN CLARK ADDRESSES THROAT CONTACT INCIDENT WITH ALYSSA THOMAS

FRI 03 JUL 2026

Caitlin Clark spoke publicly for the first time on 3 July regarding an incident with Phoenix Mercury player Alyssa Thomas during the Indiana Fever's 111-109 loss to the Mercury on 24 June. During the second quarter, Thomas pressed her fist into Clark's throat whilst both players scrambled for a loose ball. Officials did not call a foul in real time, but the WNBA subsequently reviewed the play and upgraded it to a Flagrant 2, ruling that Thomas had made reckless contact with Clark's throat in a non-basketball act.

Thomas received a one-game suspension as a result of the upgraded call. Clark told reporters after the Fever's practice that she believed the WNBA reached the correct decision, stating the incident was "pretty straightforward" when reviewed. She acknowledged that referees face difficult circumstances but said officials must do better at protecting players during such moments. Clark noted that similar concerns about WNBA officiating have persisted for three years, with players and coaches repeatedly criticising inconsistency and the amount of physical play being permitted.

Clark called for improved refereeing standards, describing the role of officials as "one of the hardest jobs in the world". She said egregious plays must be called, stating: "You cannot miss things like that." Clark's public statement came over a week after the incident generated significant debate amongst WNBA fans and observers regarding both the play itself and officiating standards in the league.
