HAMILTON TAKES SPRINT POLE AT SILVERSTONE AHEAD OF ANTONELLI

FRI 03 JUL 2026 F1/MOTORSPORT

Lewis Hamilton secured pole position for the sprint race at the British Grand Prix, edging out Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli by 0.011 seconds in qualifying at Silverstone. Hamilton, competing for Ferrari, set the fastest lap in strong sunshine conditions. Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished third, 0.321 seconds behind Hamilton's pace. The qualifying session drew approximately 150,000 spectators to the circuit.

Hamilton said the result represented a significant achievement for his Ferrari team, which he described as unexpected given Mercedes' competitive advantage. He stated: "We did not expect we would be competing for the front row, so it's an amazing surprise." Ferrari introduced minor upgrades to the car ahead of the session following a difficult race at the Austrian Grand Prix the previous week. Hamilton, a nine-time winner of the British Grand Prix, expressed his satisfaction with the performance and the support of the home crowd.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc qualified fourth, 0.327 seconds adrift of Hamilton's time. Leclerc acknowledged finding the new car difficult to manage consistently compared to his team-mate. Mercedes' George Russell finished fifth, 40 points behind Antonelli in the championship standings. The sprint race takes place on Saturday at 12:00 BST, with McLaren's Lando Norris, the reigning world champion, qualifying sixth ahead of team-mate Oscar Piastri.
